From all preliminary reports, the WMD SET (Simulated Emergency Test), involving 15 Western Branch counties (I still can't understand why Caldwell & Catawba counties were not involved!), with McDowell County as the focal point of the entire operation, was a success! Being present for the whole operation on Saturday, Aug 21st, I can sum it all up with 2 words: Organized Chaos !  I have never seen such an assembled-mass of emergency and public service vehicles, emergency units, and emergency personnel in one place in all my life!  Homeland Security, the FBI & SBI, Highway Patrol, Red Cross, Emergency Management of many counties, and a multitude of Fire Departments and Rescue Squads were all present.  But...that is the way it would be in a real-life situation.  Ham Radio wise, McDowell County, the Marion ARA,and Larry Withrow, AF4HX, in particular, are all to be commended for a job well done! GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Global Positioning System Jim N4EUX It is with regret that I accept the resignation of Ted Manuel, KF4FLY, our Vice-President.  Due to very long hours with his new  job, Ted is not able to attend the meetings.  Therefore, we will be conducting  nominations and a vote at the next meeting to fill this vacancy.  I hope that the members won't be reluctant to take on this task, if nominated.  It is not that hard of a job and we, those that are serving as officers, are here to help you.

"Article IV, Section 2: The Vice-President shall assume all the duties of the President in the absence of the President. He or she will be Chairperson of the Program Committee."

147.195 Back On The Air!!  After the 5th & 6th Repeater Work Details (painting outside of building and building/painting the equipment shelves and installing electrical hookups inside), the hardline was terminated inside and after paint dried, the repeater was set up, plugged up, and fired up!  As expected, the antenna atop the tower is going to need some fine tuning, as well as retuning the cavities.  The repeater will remain on 24/7 except when the tuning is performed shortly. Click on camera... The Newsletter undergoes constant changes...with columns coming/going,  in an attempt to bring you a newsy, easy-to-read format and platform to keep you, the reader, aware of the club's activities.  Experimental typefonts, colors, and presentations are made on a regular basis to enhance that goal.
