GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Repeater Committee : The Repeater Committee Report indicates no change in securing a coordinated frequency pair for our 2-meter repeater.

Disaster Trailer Committee :  Project is on temporary hold until after completion of other major projects and committments.

EOC Kiosk Committee:   No report for the month of March...Chairman of Committee out of town.

With the passage of the new regulations concerning "no-code" licenses, April is seeing new-license applications and upgrade applications going to new heights.  It is expected that this will be further evidenced at the Catawba Valley Hamfest in Morganton on the 21st of this month.  The WCARS VE Team may have their hands full!  Being a code instructor for many, many years, I,  for one, was not overly pleased to see the code requirement (especially 5 WPM) slip into history.  In the recent past, it seemed to be  the only thing left that distinguished us fom just being "appliance operators"!  But...I would rather see the no-code license than to see many would-be hams succumb to the internet and text-messaging syndrome (alhough I suppose they do have their place).  At any rate, the deed of no-code licensing is done and diehards like myself must live with it.  Wanna hear my viewpoint of doing away with the Novice License??  No...I guess not!    HAPPY EASTER!!
